Getting to and around Sri Lanka

By Air

The main Sri Lankan airport is the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), situated about 20 miles (32km) from the city of Colombo.

Getting to the city

Buses and taxis are easily available at the airport. Though there is a train station close to the airport, you are advised to arrange your own transportation.

Car rental

There are several car rental agencies such as Abans and Nambo available.

Airport facilities

Facilities include a bank, post office, business lounge, restaurants, snack bars, a bar and a duty-free shop.
Parking: Short- and long-term parking is available.
Departure Tax: None.

By water

You can take Indian Shipping lines cargo and passenger ship from Trivandrum. These ships are cheaper than the planes.

Getting around in Sri Lanka

Three-wheeler

The most common mode of transport in Sri Lanka is by the automobile appropriately referred to as a three-wheeler (Tri-Shaw). Also known as Tuk-Tuks, these operate in a manner similar to taxis, and area highly cost-efficient way to get around.

By car

You can also rent a car to take you around. These cars often come with their own drivers and prove to be cheaper than three wheelers and are also less prone to accidents.

Some drivers/guides are government-licensed and are extremely knowledgeable about their country and so they can provide you guided tours. Most of them are also multi-lingual.

Taxi companies

Taxis are another cost-effective way to go around Sri Lanka because they are metered and can be cheaper than three-wheelers where in all probability, you will be overcharged. Some taxi services also offer full day packages.

By bus

The buses are a good option for those on a budget. You can actually get around for next to nothing – it costs about one dollar to get half-way across the island. However, these buses can be a bit uncomfortable and crowded. You can spend a bit more and go in AC buses run at most routes but at twice the price.

By train

Sri Lanka has an extensive railway system serving almost all major towns and cities on the island except the north. There are also special observation cars for those who like to take in the scenery. Most routes are very picturesque more so when you enter the hill country especially on the Badullu-Nanu Oya line. Try to sit on the right side of the train, as it offers the better view.

By plane

Sri Lankan Airlines operates small Seaplane service to destinations such as Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Galle and many more locations. These are ideal for photography trips as you get a bird’s eye view of some of the most scenic locales of the island. Also the seaplanes land on picturesque lakes and tanks around the island.
